My original idea was to create a Rockabilly album so I got all the great musicians who created the Memphis sound and we went into the studio together and it evolved into something a little bit different than I imagined it would.

I told Mike Leach an idea I had for a session. He said, "If you'll make me the leader on the session, I'll get you the finest players in the world from the era of music you are talking about."
I was very happy with what he did as session leader, including the brilliant ideas that these magnificent monster musicians came up with off the top of their head. I now see why these guys were on so many hits in the Memphis blues era.
Even though this is a total different direction than I had taken in the past with my playing, I really wanted to do an album like this that reached back into my past as an east coast beach music bass player in the late 50's and 60's. After all, music is music. Steel guitar fits so perfectly in blues.
Remember, most of the beginning monsters of the blues era played regular guitar with a bar and did much slide guitar on all their recordings. I have taken it a step beyond and incorporated pedals on E9th and C6th, to give blues a new voice. I feel between what I've done and what this magnificent band of well known musicians gave me, that this is an album that any steel guitarist or any band in general, should have in their collection.
It is absolutely timeless. It will never be out of date, never looked at as hokey or elementary, but is done in good taste with the listening musicians taste in mind. If you play steel guitar or play music on any level, you will have to enjoy this production with you in mind. It's just good music that can be enjoyed by anybody, even your wife and girlfriend. |

When I meet people and they ask me what I do and I tell them I'm a steel guitar player and they say "Oh!" in a tone of voice and with a look on their face that says they're sorry they asked, I don't even try to explain what a wonderful instrument the steel guitar is because they've already pidgeon-holed me in their minds.
